FFA Loot: Why encourage greed?
Diablo 2 was an amazing game with some amazing flaws.
One major flaw was the looting system. Upon (and usually preceeding) the death of a boss, all the players in a game would surround the position below the dying foe to compete in the feeding frenzy that is FFA loot. Players, make sure your inventory is empty and click like a maniac to pick up anything and everything being dropped in hopes that after actually looking at the newly found items in your inventory, you managed to grab the one out of ten items to drop that was actually of value.
Furthermore, the competitive looting system mentioned above would provoke treasure hunting players to join games with other players (for the increased drop quality) and intentionally split up from the group to kill their own monsters and be the only one around to ravage the carcass in the rare case it provides worthwhile returns.
That was 9 years ago. Fast forward to today. Blizzard North is no more. I can guarantee you the increasingly successful Blizzard of today absolutely will not pass their former FFA loot system to Diablo 3.
So, why is Gearbox adopting it?
