I registered here to be able to post because I want to bring this up. I am a staff member at Neocrisis ( http://www.neocrisis.com ) under the name "Justin D.", and I've already sent an e-mail to Gearbox about this.
Apparently Valve has talked down on the PS3 community, and it's right after the Randy Pitchford comments about Valve's lack of PS3 support ( http://www.analoghype.com/2009/11/pr...f-ps3-support/ ). Chet Faliszek (lead director of Left 4 Dead) had some interesting things to say to CVG ( http://www.computerandvideogames.com....php?id=226831 ): Quote:

The PS3's community functions aren't as good as the 360's but this person is just tying to bash the PS3. It's not that much worse. The community aspect of the PS3 isn't a reason not to release a game.

I think you bashed Xbox just a little too hard. We stand by them because they continue to bring great stuff. We don't demand free internet and try to share exclusives like the PS3, Microsoft has a different business strategy and we buy from them because we stand by that strategy.

Valve chose to develop on the PC and eventually the 360. From what I understand, they didn't really intend to do a PS3 port of The Orange Box and something happened along the line (I don't want to assume so if anyone can tell me what happened here so I can remember, please do) and a PS3 port done by someone other than Valve came to be.
The PS3 architecture is more difficult and foreign to develop on, and for the most part, at least until more recently, the PS3 has had a significantly smaller playerbase, which makes it less appealing to spend all that time learning how to develop for the platform. Gabe Newell, I think, specifically stated how he got in the business to make games, not because of a "programming fetish." The simple fact is that they, as developers, have the right to choose the systems they prefer and what they want to develop on. The 360 consumer base and utilities, along with Microsoft's history in the business is simply more attractive than the PS3, especially outside of the Japanese market (who have a vested interest in Sony.) Honestly, I like Gearbox (OpFor was a fantastic expansion) and Randy Pitchford earns credit for speaking his mind, but it's a little hypocritical for them to have any comment on how Valve supports their games when something like Borderlands comes out in the way it did. The game clearly had not gone through nearly enough QA testing, extremely obvious bugs that should have never made it past any playtest, such as Lilith's phase strike simply not doing anything, the tons of other skills that don't work properly, and especially the loot cards not showing all the stats. I mean, those weapon stats are pretty much the entire game, what happened there? And, of course through all that, the PC version still hasn't gotten a patch to fix even the rudimentary problems that the console versions did, despite the fact that the process of releasing a patch for PCs is far less troublesome than doing so for a console, at least in regards to the 360's patching process. eh, valve is not a PS3 developer. paying another party to port orange box might have been an experiment, I suppose that the experiment can be considered to have "failed". Really I am not sure what the issue is. Consoles are not "open" systems, and expecting free DLC is not a reasonable expectation. Other developers have complained about the huge costs of developing for PS3 and the poor resulting returns.
it appears that gearbox has made some decisions based upon this apparent valve grudge, as a result they have released a superb game with inferior browser service (not to mention the "security" solution). borderlands would have been so much better using the steam matchmaking, security, achievements and voice services.
