Default PC won't recognize Borderlands DVD

So, I had this problem from the start. I bought a legit copy, but sometimes my PC (win XP, all specs are cool) just won't read the DVD. Mostly it will not even recognize the fact that there is a DVD in the drive, and when I'll try to access it - it will show me the regular empty window when there's no disc in it.

For several months it was annoying but OK. Now it's a miracle if I get the drive to read it. Even when it does that, the SecuROM check goes 'time-out' and the game won't start. I've checked with other DVDs and my drive reads them fine.

Can anyone help?

Have you checked if there is a firmware update available for your DVD drive?
