Interesting. This is one of the things that makes troubleshooting problems on the PC so difficult. Everyone has a multitude of applications on their PC and many applications (like instant messaging, Steam, virtual DVD emulators, etc) will run at boot time and sit in the System Tray. Since each user can have a unique combination of applications running while the game is running, it can make tracking down what causes a problem to be much more difficult.

I wonder if having FRAPs enabled while the game is running is pushing the GPU and somehow causing the game to constantly be allocating memory. I still can't help think that games crashing after 15-20 minutes due to GPU overheating and this issue with FRAPs are somehow related. I'm not sure what the ultimate problem is, but having this information may help us track down the problem.

Thanks.

I think the FRAPs was causing a frame rate issue which is different from the memory leak issue. I'm not running FRAPs. Removing most programs from the equation is pretty easy using msconfig. Of course you have to have steam to play the game if you bought it off steam (i did).

Having issues with FRAPs kind of make sense to me since it actually is a video utility, being able to report FPS and record video of the game play.

Well I am not running fraps or anything so thats not it as I can see. It seems to clearly be a problem related to crossfire / sli / vid cards with dual gpus on 1 board scenarios.

Disabling crossfire as suggested does solve the problem but is no solution. I play a lot of games, and disabling 1 of my video cards entirely that I paid for and use in all other games in order to play just borderlands is not an answer ><...

Haha yep, which is why it also makes things so frustrating at times. I tried basically every UE3 fix I could remember and usually Google turns up 1-2 good leads on problems like this but NOTHING worked for me lol. Man that was frustrating but I'm so relieved to have found the fix, too bad I had already put in ~20 hours of game time.

It shouldn't be completely surprising though as FRAPs captures/filters frame buffer info and other games have had issues with overlay/injection programs like Precision/RivaTuner and anti-cheat detection software. I don't run those overlays in-game for that specific reason, but usually FRAPs is still OK.

Anyways, love the game, Gearbox did an amazing job of making an incredibly fun game.

I'm not using FRAPS and still got the memory leak tonight with Catalyst AI turned off, which means that Crossfire was also off. I have the STEAM version of Borderlands, no DLC (and would love to buy it, but to be honest will hold off to see if this issue gets fixed).

The only background apps in the system tray I have are:

Microsoft Security Essentials
ATI Catalyst Control Centre
Windows Update

I have no instant messaging or virtual DVD stuff. The windows 7 build was clean about 3 months ago when I put in a new motherboard.

PC Hardware:
Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard
Q6600 @ 3.2 ghz
Corsair Dominator 4 gb RAM
500GB Hard Disk
2 x 5850 GPU Crossfired
Windows 7 64 bit

I've monitored CPU and GPU temps and all are ok. I have a fair few games on my PC and without exception all run ok apart from Borderlands. To give you an idea of the games I play:

Dirt 2
Bad Company 2
GRID
Half Life 2 and EPS
Counterstrike
Mirrors Edge
Metro 2033
Just Cause 2
Left for Dead 2
Resident Evil 5
Crysis
Crysis Warhead
rFactor
Need for Speed Shift

That's a fair few games and all have had a few hours spend on them on the past few months.

If there's anything you'd like me to try that would monitor things for you, or if there is a program I could run that would run a trace and help you I'd be more than glad to.

I'd rather help than moan, but a moan is ok every now and again too

I adore the game and have got up to the mission 'The Final Piece'. Have turned it off for the evening as I don't want it to end too quickly

Have any of the ATI guys tried the new 10.7 drivers to see if they help? I am going to upgrade from the 10.5a that I am using at the moment (with no problems) to 10.7 when I get home, and see if the leak is still occuring

I have the newest ati drivers and I am having this problem as well.

Basically, I get a huge frame rate drop, then it just freezes.

Win7 x64.
Steam version

This is a fresh format. As in, I just did it today.

We haven't forgotten about this (just to let everyone know). Still trying to determine the cause.
