Default XBox ADPCM Codec

I am trying to make a custom weapon sound, and after reading many past threads I have learned I need this. I downloaded it and tried to install it, but when I right click, it doesn't say install. Is their an alternative way to install. Is this codec completely necessary?

Also, in what way do I use this?

XBox ADPCM fares better with short sounds you hear frequently, i.e. gunshots. OGG compression is better for long sounds or a "library" of sounds, like music or dialogue.

I know how to install it. I was asking what it does.

Also why can't I install it? It won't show "install" when I right click. Do I have the wrong OS?

I have an Windows XP Media Center.
