Late last night I downloaded this new firefox extension called Ubiquity. Basically it adds a contextual command line to firefox that is summoned by pressing alt+space. (if on linux you need to manually change it to ctrl+space since alt+space is a shortcut already). There's a video of it in action on the page I recommend checking out.
But if you're a productivity power-geek you'll probably love this extension. It's still in the early stages, but I'm hoping that this becomes more than just a firefox extension and integrates well with other applications such as mozilla thunderbird. Even then, it's nice to be able to quickly access google maps, tweet on twitter, and start an e-mail without having to worry about navigating through gmail. Tips: Tutorial: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Labs/Ubiqui..._User_Tutorial In command line enter "command-list" to open up a list of commands.

Wow... totally worth downloading this. I've used it for two seconds and I don't ever want to be without it again.

It's so hard to convince people to use it. Whenever I'm like "hey there's this awesome firefox extension that uses a command line..." people lose me after command-line. It's like trying to convince people why something like ad-block, google reader, or RSS feed bookmarks, are incredibly useful but doesn't do anything you couldn't ordinarily do with a few extra clicks. Ubiquity is hard to sell. The command line is a turn off in a flashy GUI centric user era. And the very abstract concept is hard to sell and get people to try. You really just need to use it and experiment with it to see how it improves your internet experience. I like to say that Ubiquity will make your internet your bitch, it does your bidding for once. edit: on a sidenote do any of you guys twitter? my username on twitter is "reesebw." also, if you are, ubiquity has a pretty nifty tinyurl command for twitter purposes.

I really like it for google searches but thats all i've got so far
EDIT: just played around with the tutorials a bit...very good extension. I can see this being useful for a lot of people. Not too insane for me but I'm sure there are tons of people out there that would utilize it 24/7 Last edited by Wh0 iZ OriGinaL; August 28th, 2008 at 03:54 AM. |

man holy **** that looks so badass. ima DL firefox solely for ubiquity. thanks kilde...oh & i hope you're right about it being integrated into desktop or even the start menu...that'd be really badass if you could get it integrated into start...i mean that's really the only drawback to the ext is that you've gotta be in browser to utilize it...whereas if it was on desktop you could effectively launch browser if needed, but for other things like email (when it goes outside of gmail) and calculations and translations, definitions, things like that where you dont need the browser. hell even w/ wiki & google search, amazon search things like that...since the command line displays the results, you can get sufficient info to answer general questions solely from the command line w/out ever launching the browser. man this is ****** sweet.

Yea, Mac has something called "Quicksilver" that is integrated into the desktop. It's pretty badass. It doesn't work within firefox so Ubiquity will fill that void. Such a good find
