console warranty only last a year....chances are he's past that point. and Sony charges $120-$150 when you send it in. I think your HDD will be wiped out too. so make sure to back up everything you can.

Yea I just called the store I bought it from and I have been paying into and extended warranty contract.Guess I'll have to suck it up and wait 3 weeks to get my system back.
sorry enygma..I'm really not the type of person to blame a game for destroying my system..trust me I've had many crashes with games on my PC that I've had to deal with and nearly all of the were software based. I wasn't trying to lay the blame on this particular game..actually yes I was ..either way I was and am choked this happened..and it seems to have soley revolved around this particular game and after witnessing various problems circulating around this game I concluded this was the root cause. |

You should get tips when calling a custumer service.
Be sure to explain this happened beyond your fault. Try to get a manager on the phone. There are several more tips to get free repairs even beyond warrenty. You can't blame borderlands for a broken blu-ray drive |

I have the same issue. I've been giving my PS3 time to cool down but it only reads discs now for like half an hour. Most likely going to fry my laser all together soon. I only encountered this problem since playing Borderlands.

sounds like system failure, not game related, if it happened while saving, I would try another harddrive before condeming blu-ray lens

My fiance and I played Borderlands for a few days until a patch came out that instantly caused audio stutters, corrupted save files, etcetcetc. Now we're having the EXACT SAME PROBLEM where our ps3 won't play any discs whatsoever. Never had a problem until they released the patch. So yes, it is being caused from the game/patch.

We ended up wiping the system in the hopes of salvaging it, but no such luck. Brought it over to Best Buy and they gave us a new slim and some extra cash for the cost difference. We're not running Borderlands until we know for sure it's not going to break anything else. It's so frustrating to wait this long for a game that is essentially unplayable. |

Geez bro sorry to hear about that, freakin sucks. But what is it with you people and your idiotic statements that it's his Blu Ray disc drive? Seriously? Does anyone use their brain anymore? He clearly stated that everything was perfectly fine until he played Borderlands, reached level 10, attempted to save his game, the game froze, and now nothing will load. How in the world do those actions dictate that his Blu Ray drive is busted? I've done tech support and fixing/troubleshooting of people's computers and otherwise for years and 95% of the time their problems arise when they do or change something in the system that shouldn't have been done. It's tech support 101, cause and effect. Something occurred that shouldn't have when he was attempting to save his game and now there's a problem, therefore, the interaction between his PS3 and Borderlands caused the fault. A fault that didn't arise until he played Borderlands, a game which I shouldn't have to remind anyone, is highly bugged and glitched. Coincidence that this happened specifically after he played Borderlands? I SERIOUSLY doubt it. Possibly his firmware was affected, or perhaps since all game saves are stored on the HDD, it damaged the way the HDD interacts with the rest of the hardware and software of the system. Whatever the case, the involvement of an extremely technically flawed; albeit epic, game could EASILY be the cause of the problems. Anyone who thinks that software can't possibly affect a computer system in such a way is sadly mistaken. But anyway, the best of luck to you bro. I hope you get it ironed out, couldn't imagine not having my PS3

The original description would point to bluray or HDD problems. Since he can play HDD-based games without issue, it leaves bluray as the most likely candidate.
Since all bluray drives will die at some point and he has a pretty old console, its more likely that it is coincidental this occurred while playing borderlands than borderlands caused it due to the way borderlands makes use of the console. He could have been playing any game when it occurred. In addition to this, if he was playing borderlands like many others are, he was likely clocking a long sessions. Extended use of moving parts increases the likelihood they will break. Its simply logical thinking. Whereas it is a logical fallacy to assume that because he was playing borderlands at the time of his console failing that borderlands is the cause of the failure. |

so then is it just "coincidental" that peoples systems are breaking recently after playing borderlands? since I first played borderlands on my PS3, it only reads games about half of the time, some games are really glitchy when they do load, and none of my PSN games are working, including demos.
